Reading Reflection No. 2

I read How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams. Adams main theme is that despite taking many failures, there are still so many opportunities to succeed in life. He uses 3 main points in his book which are; using systems not goals, taking risks to apply for jobs, and thinking of activities as time and space. Using these three points he describes in depth how you can become more successful and do better and whatever you are doing.

I think that this book enhanced what we are learning in class because it showed me how to battle through the losses that I may have taken during this class, and how to turn those failures into positive learning experiences.

If I had to create an exercise for this class, I would try to make it something that involves scheduling and developing a schedule to stick to during the class, so that people taking the class could figure out when and how they are going to do their work.

My biggest surprise in the book was when he talked about using systems not goals. This was a big aha moment because it made me realize I have to develop a system on how to reach my goals, not just a goal to set. If you just set a goal, you will not know exactly how to reach it without a set process.

  1. Hi Nathan,
I think your assignment using the book you have chosen to read and relating it to the class would be super helpful for future students looking to take this class, or any class. I know it would have helped me when I missed a couple of assignments because I forgot they were due. This is not only helpful for school, but it helps students ensure they are on time for their daily commitments and helps them fall into a routine. Great job analyzing the book as well!

  2. Hey Nathan I actually read the same book that you did and I thought it was just as influential as you did. I also thought it was cool how you compared the class to this article because you are right about how it helps you overcome some hard times in life. I also like the assignment that you would create because it would definitely make the class way more organized.

  3. Hey Nathan. The book you read seems incredibly interesting and motivational. Turning failures into overall success is something that is extremely important in business and life in general, and I completely agree that this concept applies to this class and so much more. I also enjoy the concept of taking risks, because even failure will bring you some kind of knowledge that can help you succeed in a future attempt. Great job!
